Beate Uhse was a German pilot, entrepreneur, author and sex educator, who is known for founding the adult store chain, Beate Uhse AG. She was born on October 25, 1919 in Wargenau, East Prussia, Germany and passed away on July 16, 2001 in Switzerland.
Beate Uhse worked as a pilot during World War II and was captured by the British. After the war, she settled in Flensburg, Germany with her second husband, who was also a pilot. In 1949, she opened her first shop selling condoms, erotic literature and sexual aids in the attic of her house. This was the first store of its kind in Germany and was later expanded to become the largest adult store chain in Europe.
Uhse also wrote several books on sex education, including “The Art of Loving” and “The Joys of Sex.” She was a leading advocate for women’s sexual liberation and was instrumental in the removal of the ban on contraception in Germany in the 1960s.
Beate Uhse’s legacy continues to be felt today, as her company is still a major player in the European adult retail market. She was also the subject of a biographical film, “Beate Uhse – Das Recht auf Liebe,” which was released in 2011.
